Knurling Processing Standard

Knurling (GB/T6403.3—1986)
The process of rolling a pattern on the surface of the workpiece with a knurling tool on a lathe is called knurling. The knurled pattern generally has two kinds of straight grain and net grain, and there are thick and thin. The thickness of the pattern is determined by the size of the pitch.

1.The form of knurling and the shape of knurling pattern
The thickness of the knurled pattern should be selected according to the diameter of the knurled surface of the workpiece, the larger the diameter, the large modulus pattern; the smaller the diameter, the small modulus pattern.

2.Example of required marking for knurling
①Modulus m=0.2, straight-grain knurling, its regulation mark is: straight-grain m=0.2 (GB6403.3-1986).
② Reticulate m=0.3, reticulated knurling, its regulation mark is: reticulated m=0.3 (GB6403.3-1986).

3.Knurling processing

(1) Install the workpiece. The installation must be as firm as possible.
① When installing the workpiece, the length of the protruding chuck should be the shortest.
②The long workpiece is supported by the top.
③When turning the outer circle of the knurled part, its diameter should be about 0.25mm smaller than the final size.

(2) Install the knurling knife.
①Observe whether the cutting chips on the knurling knife are cleaned up. If necessary, use a wire brush to clean it.
②When installing the knurled cutter, the pivot pin should be aligned to deflect it by a slight angle.
④ Clamp the tool firmly.

(3) Workpiece knurling.
①Choose low cutting speed and large feed.
②Start the spindle of the machine tool and apply sufficient coolant to the knurling tool.
③Shake the knurling knife to cut into the workpiece and apply pressure until a plump diamond pattern is formed.
④ Feed the knife horizontally and then feed it longitudinally until the required knurled length is obtained.
⑤ Shake the knurled knife to quickly leave the workpiece.

(4) Chamfering.
On the end face of the workpiece, burrs are removed by cutting a 45° chamfer that reaches the bottom of the knurling groove. The heart is high.
③ Adjust the knurling knife visually, and deflect it to a slight angle for easy introduction.
④ Clamp the tool firmly.
